 Working with emotions

with Jim O'Neil

28 - 29 April

Sometimes emotions can destabilize or overwhelm us and cause fear and trouble. In contemplative Psychology, however, our approach is that emotions, even the ones we regard as problematic, are in essence pure energy. We can use them to develop our capacity to relate to ourselves gently and fearlessly. If we percieve an emotion directly, without acting out or suppressing it, we can find access to tremendous strenght, intelligence and compassion towards others, and contact the wisdom inherent in the emotion.

Karuna Training is a program in Contemplative Psychology that combines the wisdom of the meditative Buddhist tradition with the methods of Western medicine and psychology. Karuna Training is designed for people who work professionally with others, as well as for those who are interested in personal development using a contemplative model. It is well suited for therapists, medical professionals, teachers, artists, business managers, and parents.

Jim O’Neill has been practicing and studying psychoanalysis for as many years as he has been practicing Buddhism. In 1992 he completed his training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the Philadelphia Association (The Philadelphia Association was founded in 1965 by RD Laing and others to challenge accepted ways of understanding and treating mental and emotional distress.) Jim has build up a thriving therapy practice in Clapham, South London based on a Buddhist and a psychoanalytic understanding and treatment of mental suffering. He teaches at The Philadelphia Association and The Site for Contemporary Psychoanalysis, of which he a member. He is also a member of the College of Psychoanalysts and a training supervisor, supervising other practitioners’ and trainee therapists’ clinical work.

His psychotherapy teaching has often focused on the relationships and the useful links between Psychoanalysis/Psychotherapy and Buddhist studies and practice.

Jim started teaching Shambhala Training and Buddhist studies in 1994 and has taught extensively throughout Europe, at Dechen Chöling, the European Shambhala communities’ land centre in France, as well in London. In 2010 he was made a Shastri or senior teacher by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. He is a Karuna teacher and part of the Karuna faculty
